To Our Friends and Colleagues:
Thank you for supporting the mission of California Faith for Equality.
One day, we will achieve full equality for ALL Californians, including LGBTQ persons. And, people of faith will lead the way.
Please help us ensure that voices of faith are heard as the loudest voices supporting equality for ALL Californians in 2012!
Here’s why your contribution matters NOW, and what CFE will do with your donation:
In October, the folks who wanted to do away with the new FAIR Education law (which added prohibition against discrimination in classroom teaching on the basis of religion, disability and LGBT status to the existing categories of race and ethnicity) generated ALMOST enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
AND they did it without paid signature gatherers—this has almost never happened in California referendum history! How did they do it? Through conservative congregations enflamed by skewed rhetoric from their leaders.
They’ve now announced an initiative for the 2012 ballot to break apart the FAIR law by REMOVING references to LGBT Californians in history classes—OUTRAGEOUS!
What can a person who values equality, love and acceptance of “the other” as the core teaching of their faith tradition do to counteract this movement?
Speak out today, and help us to amplify YOUR voice!
It’s time to harness faith as a force for justice. It’s time to reclaim the moral authority in the public sphere and sway voters in the middle. The statewide organization that is taking back the power of religion is California Faith for Equality. And we’ve done it thanks to you.
It has been your past support that has enabled us to make significant progress in these past five years:
Your support has made California Faith for Equality a powerful force for winning full LGBT equality in California, and together we are reclaiming the voices of faith for the good of all people:
California Faith for Equality (CFE) is California’s network of congregations, organizations, and faith leaders working to win full lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality and to safeguard religious freedom. Founded in 2006, CFE has grown to be recognized by national and statewide LGBT groups as the “go to” organization for faith-related work in California. At the end of this year, our board reaffirmed the main tasks of CFE:
- Strengthen the critical role of faith communities in the broader LGBT equality and justice movements;
- Increase the visibility of LGBT supportive faith leaders in the media and their capacity to advocate in the public arena;
- Analyze and disseminate the latest research and tools (curricula, teachings, etc.) at the intersection of religion and LGBT equality;
- Train congregational leaders to make LGBT equality and inclusion a concrete and ongoing part of their messages and programs;
- Highlighting the universal messages of acceptance and love of the “other” as a foundational tenet of all faith traditions
- Equip secular organizations and activists to engage people of faith, and heal the rift between faith communities and LGBT people.
In pursuing these goals, CFE is committed to supporting and building upon existing regional organizing, and working with all faith-related groups. As the statewide “hub,” we offer collaborative opportunities for existing faith groups, fill regional vacuums where such groups do not exist, and serve as a bridge between the faith-based sector and national/state/local LGBT organizations.
We understand we live in challenging economic times, but we must continue the work of overcoming deep religious-based biases, and it’s needed now more than ever.
To wait until the first TV ad from our opponents hits the airwaves will be too late. Your gift of any amount will help ensure that our voice is heard.
If you have a business, congregation or organizational connection, you might suggest they make a donation or purchase a membership, and multiply your gift.
Please join me in supporting this essential resource by making a contribution today. Blessings and peace to you and your loved ones in this holiday season.
Sincerely,
Marc Haupert
Interim Executive Director
