CFE has taken a leadership role in bringing an resolution forward to the Board of the San Diego Unified School District to protect students from bullying. The School Board will be voting tonight at their regularly scheduled meeting on a resolution to create “Safer Schools for All Students.” That resolution is the first comprehensive plan to protect all students and to create systems and channels of complaints and enforcements across the whole district.
Samuel Chu, CFE’s Executive Director, has sent letters to all five board members, urging them to vote for the measure. “As an immigrant, I know what it is like to be bullied in the schoolyard because you are different,” said Chu. “As a pastor, I know the harm we do when we deny someone’s the fullness of their God-given, sacred humanity. As a straight person who serves the largest religious network working for LGBTQ equality, I know the violence that has been done in the name of God and “faith”.
“In the face of unspeakable violence, we must turn our overwhelming feelings of anger and sadness into concrete acts of faith and justice. CFE land its faith leaders have a moral imperative to act and stand publicly for inclusion, love and justice. CFE is poised to take this strategy to the over 40 school districts in the San Diego County and also across the state.”
California Faith for Equality -San Diego will join local congregations from various faiths and traditions to host a meeting to collaborate on work with the school board and on ways to assure swift and broad implementation of the plans. This meeting will take place on October 27, 2010.
